Apprenticeships

We are committed to offering a range of opportunities to new drivers across England and Wales. The key to our success in training new drivers is the Apprentice Driver Programme that we’ve developed in partnership with a local college. We utilise the resources of the college and our own Driver Training team to deliver the apprenticeship, which lasts 13 months.

A new cohort starts every quarter and our aim is to train apprentices to the highest professional standards, at no cost to them. The initial training period is twelve weeks and the wages during this period start at National Living Wage as a minimum, for a guaranteed 40 hours a week.

During this time, apprentices will receive training for the LGV theory and practical elements as well as shadowing an experienced driver to gain the essential skills and knowledge that will be needed to complete the course.

Once the initial training period is complete, apprentices will be qualified and competent to drive an LGV unaccompanied in a safe and fuel-efficient manner, to deliver customers’ products at the right time and location, with the correct documentation, and all in a professional manner. Once qualified, the apprentices will receive the drivers’ pay for the depot they are assigned to work for.

Apprentices will undertake further training over the remainder of the 13 months before taking the End Point Assessment and achieving the Level 2 Apprenticeship in Supply Chain Specialist Large Goods Vehicle Driver.

The minimum requirements to join our Apprentice Driver programme are:

Essential

  • Candidates must be 18+ and hold a valid full UK driver’s licence Cat B
  • Hold a provisional LGV Cat C licence

Desirable

  • English and Maths, GCSE C or Functional Skills level 1 or 2

To obtain your provisional LGV Licence you must have completed D2 and D4 forms. These can be obtained at a main Post Office or ordered online at https://www.gov.uk/dvlaforms. In addition to completing these forms you are required to have a medical with either your GP or a specialist LGV medical company, which you can find via the internet.

Once this has been completed you will need to send these forms to the DVLA at:

DVLA
Swansea
SA99 1BR

Obtaining the LGV Cat C provisional licence can take between three and six weeks and it is essential to have this before being able to join the programme.  However, if you wish to apply for the Apprenticeship before you have your provisional licence, let us know how far through the process you are in your supporting statement on the application form.
