 Spiller Killer Campaign

Devon County Council's innovative 'Spiller Killer' campaign highlighting the dangers posed by diesel spills on Devon's roads was considerably boosted when Paul Willis and Mike Kavich got GDL involved.

The initiative is part of the County Council's 'Bringing Bikers Out of the Blindspot' motor-cycle safety campaign, aiming to raise awareness of the problem of diesel spills and the potential consequences.

As part of the campaign GDL has been asking drivers to report any potentially dangerous spills and to take precautionary measures themselves by not overfilling their tanks.

Paul Willis, GDL Driver Training Manager said: "We have always taken safety issues very seriously and all our drivers receive continuous and regular specialist training. We maintain rigorous safety and maintenance checks on all our vehicles and are at the forefront in introducing new accident prevention measures.

"We are only too aware of the dangers of diesel spillage having lost one of our own vehicles to this type of hazard. We are very keen to do all we can to raise awareness of this potential killer, both through training our own staff and by supporting this commendable initiative."

Councillor Margaret Rogers, Devon County Council's Executive Member for Environment, said: "Government statistics show that motorcyclists in particular are twice as likely to suffer injuries in accidents caused by diesel spills than as a result of ice and snow, but every driver is at risk from this hazard.

"We are delighted that a Devon based company with such a high profile as Gregory Distribution has opted to support this campaign and we hope that others will follow its highly responsible lead.

"It is essential for as many people as possible to realise the dangers inherent in diesel spillages and that the growing awareness amongst the transport industry, farmers, petrol filling stations and the driving public about the problems is translated into reporting incidents through our specially designated hotline."

A special hotline number: 01392 383329 has been set up for people to report diesel spills on the roads.
