The new office accommodation and transit warehouse at the strategically located Old Sodbury depot was officially opened by GDL's chairman Jack Gregory on the last day of January.
The simple ceremony, which was attended by the Old Sodbury based staff along with directors and senior managers across all GDL Business Units, was inevitably tinged with sadness following the tragic death of David Durston, who had done so much to bring the Old Sodbury Project to fruition.
David had specifically asked Jack Gregory to perform the opening ceremony and the Chairman responded by recounting the humble beginnings of the firm and how it had grown firstly under his stewardship in the post-war years and then at the hands of the current Chief Executive, his son John, since 1985.
Jack Gregory unveiled the plaque with its dedication to David Durston before undertaking a guided tour of the new facility with his wife, Kennedy, and then joining the GDL team for a buffet lunch.
Earlier, John Gregory had outlined the significance of Old Sodbury and its location just a few miles from Junction 18 of the M4 and how the £3 million investment is so crucial to the future of the business. He went on to explain some of the difficulties experienced in the past at various sites in Bristol and how fortunate GDL had been in identifying and securing the Old Sodbury site before it came on to the open market.
He also paid a sincere tribute to the contribution of David Durston and how sad it had been that David has not lived to see the opening.
